History of the center
Listen to Our Story
In 1997 a group of women graduated from the social management course has founded a self-help group Mother Center "KRONA". In 1999 the public organization "KRONA" was officially registered.
That social management course was hold by trainers of German NGO “OWEN” in 1996-1997, Ukraine’s difficult times of the long-living economic crisis. The course had some leading ideas; one of them was to create several women's self-help groups for support and development of active life position needed for survival. After the course’s finish five self-help groups were set up, including “KRONA”. And finally it was the only viable group not only survived, but also developed into a powerful organization.
Firstly it was a Women's Public Organization "Mother Center "KRONA". Later its name has become as "Kharkiv Women's Organization "KRONA". Now the official title sounds as "Gender Center for Information and Analysis "KRONA".
In 2011 our organization has celebrated its 12th anniversary. It’s a considerable age for any NGO trying to survive in complicated times. Moreover, the Ukrainian state is unable to support such public organizations. In our country NGOs have just been empowered to create a civil and democratic society of citizens with equal rights and opportunities for their self-realization.
During 12 years "KRONA" has experienced a hard way of its development.
1999-2003: Our organization was primarily focused on informal education for women. Training programs "Empowerment" has drawn a wide response in Kharkiv. Women whom we were teaching wanted us to hold a program with interactive methods for their children. It was the impetus for creation of training programs for trainers-multipliers who were spreading our ideas by creating of self-help groups for women and children. Such training program has been hold for women from Lviv. The program’s main purposes were to support women, to strengthen their life position and to high their assertiveness level – surely we have succeeded.
In 2003 we started to issue a magazine "Ya", which is currently produced as the Gender Magazine "Ya".
During 2004-2007 we continued to execute projects for women, but our goals have changed. At that time we have worked with women with an active civil position who would like to develop it. We have implemented a big project "Women are creating the future" which focused on trainings for women in many cities of Ukraine: Lviv, Donetsk, Lugansk, Simferopol. Also we have held two summer schools for public activists.
The next phase of our organization development (2007-2009) is marked by gradual transition to the implementation of gender projects and programs. One of the most successful programs was "The Ukrainian Road to Gender Equality" hold in eight cities of Ukraine. The program was concentrated on moderated discussion with representatives of NGOs, local governments, mass-media and state educational system. This program has initiated KRONA’s research and analytical work. As a result of those discussions we have released two paper collections "The Ukrainian Road to Gender Equality" with Ukraine’s gender policy analysis.
This stage of our development is more associated with our public and political work. During this period we focused on consistent and permanent communication with journalists by organizing journalistic gender schools to enhance their gender sensitivity and to improve a professional level of media coverage towards gender issues.
2010 is considered to be a milestone in our development: KRONA has become the Gender Center for Information and Analysis.
KRONA has established the national Gender Expert Platform for consolidation and cooperation between Ukrainian experts working in the area of gender equality, and for more effective gender policy implementation in Ukraine. The Platform is aimed to be engaged in gender studies, development of recommendations and promotion of ideas based on academic studies.
KRONA has created a Media-Center which manages the issue of Magazine "Ya", various gender publications for journalists and educators. Media-Center also includes an updating Internet website focused on gender issues.
Training and educational activity of KRONA is going on having the form of seminars and training courses for different target audiences (experts, officials and educators, pressmen etc).
